Employee Onboarding: First Impressions Count
Most of us are familiar with the five Cs for employee onboarding of new staff…. BUT how do you actually implement this with content that is fun, engaging and meaningful? Imagine if these pieces of content could be all of these things. Well, the good news is that with a bit of imagination and creativity, they can be.
Let’s face it, the employee onboarding process is usually an epic adventure of never-ending paperwork, a rather average induction and (if you are lucky!) a welcome pack and coffee mug. All with the sole purpose of trying to meet the necessary five Cs of onboarding…
1. Compliance
Paperwork, policies and codes of conduct
2. Clarification
Defining roles and expectations
3. Culture
What the company stands for
4. Connections
Introductions to management, co-workers and other relevant staff
5. Check back
Follow-ups
Similar to a romantic relationship, the ‘honeymoon period’ of the first 90 days of employee onboarding is crucial to setting the tone for a good start. There are a number of ways to make the welcome experience, well … more welcoming while at the same time successfully communicating your EVP!
We particularly love the way AXA used onboarding gifts to bring their culture to life.

AXA launched the AXA Hello onboarding campaign to make their new employees’ first days that more engaging and welcoming. Plus, it goes a long way to communicating its culture and mission too. Recognizing that starting a new job can feel cold and involve a lot of mandatory training, AXA created a week-long experience to introduce new hires to their company culture. New colleagues received a welcome pack containing five gifts – each symbolizing different cultural aspects of AXA – accompanied by a QR code leading to a digital experience. What a cool, award-winning campaign that connects with employees brings company culture to life. Well done to AXA and their partners.
